Frequently Asked Questions
What is aikido?
Aikido is a dynamic
Japanese martial art that teaches unification of mind, body and spirit,
which helps to bring us back in harmony with nature. It was created by Master Morihei Ueshiba ("O-Sensei").
What is aikido training like?
Training in aikido begins with traditional bowing and is followed by a
series of warm-up and stretching exercises. Afterward, Sensei (the
teacher) will demonstrate a technique and ask the class to pair up.
Students take turns applying and receiving the technique. At the end of
class, we end with another traditional bow.
Why is bowing and tradition so important?
Bowing reminds us that the dojo is a
place of learning, safety and cooperation. Practicing our best possible
etiquette shows respect for our teachers and our classmates.
Who is Morihei Ueshiba? And, how can I
get more information about him?
Master Ueshiba
founded Aikido in the 1930's. One of the world's most accomplished and
powerful martial artists, he studied various styles of jujitsu, spear,
sword, bujutsu and Shinto. He died in 1969, but remains an inspiration
to all practitioners through the continued teachings of his students.
